The story of this Saab begins with its delivery from Jikab Bil AB in Borås to the dedicated Saab enthusiast, Stig Svedberg of Dalstorp. It was a year later when a new Saab model, the 9-5, was introduced, prompting Svedberg’s return to the dealership. He humorously exclaimed, “You sold me an old car; I wanted a new one!” Consequently, Svedberg acquired a brand-new 9-5, and the current owner’s grandfather purchased the Jubilee 9000 CSE, which had just over 10,000 km on the odometer at that time. Since 1998, the Saab 9000 has been driven regularly and maintained within the service schedule.

In 2012, the car was passed down to the son, and in 2017, the next generation took ownership. Over the years, the father and grandson have collectively driven approximately 40,000 km and consistently maintained the vehicle. Today, the Saab 9000 Jubilee Edition resides once more with the second generation of owners, preserving its legacy.

A Glimpse into Saab 9000’s Legacy

The Saab 9000 was manufactured in two generations between 1984 and 1998. It marked Saab’s return to a transverse engine layout, reminiscent of the Saab 92. The development of the Saab 9000 commenced in 1974 as a replacement for the Saab 99. When the partnership between Saab and Volvo fell through, Saab turned to Fiat-owned Lancia, resulting in the Saab 9000, Fiat Croma, Lancia Thema, and Alfa Romeo 164, all sharing the same chassis and numerous components.

Upon its release, the Saab 9000 offered a four-cylinder, 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with 175 horsepower. The following year, the same engine was introduced without the turbo, producing 130 horsepower in the 9000i. The Saab 9000 garnered positive reviews from the media and consistently ranked as the second-best-selling car in Sweden after Volvo. Its significance persisted until May 6, 1998, when the 9-5 took over.

A Farewell to the Saab 9000: Shifting Focus to the Saab 9-5

In this final chapter of the Saab 9000’s production journey, we witness the end of an era for a remarkable automobile. As the four-door CD/E and the sporty Aero variants took their final bow after MY 1997, only a limited 1,400 Saab 9000s graced the assembly lines for the ultimate 1998 model year. Among these, a mere 400 were destined for the shores of the United States, Saab’s primary foreign stronghold.

  • Yes I was one of the proud owners best car I had ever owned and driven and I say that as a former “AMOC member” ! Great cars very reliable uncomplicated and fun to drive regularly serviced by Saab did not let one down was really sad when the time came to say good buy was a tragedy Saab production ceased.

  • Mine was a 1996 CSE five-door, same Scarab green body colour, same interior, automatic transmission, but with the “triangle” style wheel rims. That car was The Love Of My Life.
