A Rolling Testimony to Innovation

A recent auction on Bring a Trailer has seen the sale of a unique Saab artifact, humorously referred to by enthusiasts as the “turbo shopping cart.” Despite the playful nickname, this item is a serious piece of automotive history. It comprises an 841cc Saab two-stroke inline-three engine attached to a four-speed gearbox, all mounted on a wheeled test stand. Selling for $5,500 on February 7, 2024, this piece has captivated Saab aficionados with its charm and mechanical intrigue.

Accompanying the engine are a starter, generator, air cleaner, and exhaust system, all integral to its operation. The four-speed gearbox comes complete with clutch hydraulics and the innards of two drive axles. This setup is a testament to Saab’s commitment to engineering and design, reflected in every component, down to the casting numbers viewable in the auction’s gallery.

Functionality Meets Vintage Aesthetics

The rolling test stand does not only serve a functional purpose but also carries a certain aesthetic appeal. Its steel framework, finished in gray, may show signs of wear with chips and blemishes, but these imperfections only add character to the piece.

The control panel is a window into the past, equipped with an ignition toggle, a coolant temperature gauge, a choke cable, and a starter button. The inclusion of a black California license plate adds an authentic touch, hinting at the item’s storied past.

Reflecting on Saab’s Legacy

This over-half-a-century-old 3-cylinder beauty represents a bridge between the past and the present, as reflected in one of the auction participant’s comments. The reference to the ’64 SAAB and the ’66 GT 850s, in contrast with the contemporary 2024 Buick Envista, shows the enduring legacy of the three-cylinder design. The sale of this item is not just a transaction; it’s a celebration of Saab’s innovative spirit, which continues to influence even modern vehicles marketed to today’s and tomorrow’s seniors.

The Future of Classic Engineering

The sale of this unique Saab engine and gearbox on a test stand is more than just an auction; it’s a nod to the timeless appeal of classic engineering. It’s a reminder that the vehicles of yesteryear still have much to teach us about innovation, design, and the sheer joy of mechanical craftsmanship. As new generations continue to discover the pleasure of classic car culture, pieces like the “turbo shopping cart” will continue to inspire and delight.
