The Saab 99 Turbo and Its Remarkable Legacy

Back in 1979, when the Saab 99 Turbo first hit the roads, it was an era of significant achievements and cultural milestones. The Swedish music scene was flourishing with the release of Blondie’s album “Eat To The Beat,” while Swedish tennis legend Bjorn Borg was dominating the courts.

The Saab company itself was making headlines with the introduction of its groundbreaking Viggen fighter aircraft. Amidst this vibrant period, the Saab 99 Turbo emerged as a revolution in practical turbocharging for road cars.

Limited to just 750 units in the United Kingdom, the Saab 99 Turbo was a 3-door model that captivated enthusiasts with its unique design and performance capabilities. In late 1979, a final batch of five Saab 99 Turbos was imported to the UK, with DWB 710V being one of them. This particular car was purchased new by Mr. Graham Turner’s father and has remained under his ownership ever since.

Distinctive Features and Meticulous Maintenance

DWB 710V, finished in Jet Black (BK01), showcases the timeless elegance of the Saab 99 Turbo. Its red/burgundy interior perfectly complements the striking exterior. The car boasted a generous list of standard features, including front and rear headrests, Bosch driving lights, a steel sliding sunroof, heated seats, and a Blaupunkt stereo system. However, it was the technological advancements that truly justified the higher price tag, as the Saab 99 Turbo surpassed even the Ferrari 308 in mid-range acceleration.

Maintenance and care played a crucial role in preserving the Saab 99 Turbo’s pristine condition. Authorized Saab dealers underwent rigorous training to handle the specialized maintenance required for this extraordinary vehicle.

Impeccable Restoration and Originality

Although the car had been stored since the early 1990s, it received regular maintenance and was housed in an airplane hangar. In 2015, a decision was made to give the Saab 99 Turbo a fresh coat of paint, ensuring the original beauty of the car would be preserved. The restoration process involved stripping the exterior panels to bare metal, which revealed no signs of corrosion—an exceptional characteristic in the Saab 99 Turbo world.

While the exterior received a fresh coat of Jet Black paint, the originality of the engine bay paintwork remained intact, mirroring its appearance when it left the factory. Exterior improvements also included the replacement of the front and rear screen trims and bumper chrome. The alloy wheels were refinished and fitted with new Continental tires. Inside, the original headlining was replaced with rare original Saab material, maintaining the car’s authenticity.

The Saab 99 Turbo holds a cherished place in automotive history

With its remarkable history, exceptional maintenance, and meticulous restoration, DWB 710V represents one of the finest remaining examples of the iconic Saab 99 Turbo. Its unique provenance, low mileage of 69,500 miles, complete history file, and one-owner status make it a reference-worthy collector’s car. Graham Turner’s offering of this Saab 99 Turbo exemplifies his commitment to sourcing and presenting exceptional automobiles to enthusiasts worldwide.

For over 15 years, Goran Aničić has been passionately focused on Saab automobiles and everything related to them. His initial encounter with Saab cars took place back in 2003 when the first Saab 9-3 and sedan version were introduced. At that moment, he was captivated by the car's Scandinavian design logic and top-notch engineering, and everything that followed stemmed from that first encounter. Later on, through his work at the editorial team of the Serbian automotive magazines "Autostart" and later "AutoBild," he had the opportunity to engage more closely with Saab vehicles. In 2008, he tested the latest Saab cars of that time, such as the Saab 9-3 TTiD Aero and Saab 9-3 Turbo X. In 2010, as the sole blogger from the region, he participated in the Saab 9-5ng presentation in Trollhättan, Sweden. Alongside journalists from around the world, he got a firsthand experience of the pinnacle of technological offerings from Saab at that time. Currently, Goran owns two Saabs: a 2008 Saab 9-3 Vector Sportcombi with a manual transmission, and a Saab 9-3 Aero Griffin Sport Sedan from the last generation, which rolled off the production line in Trollhättan in December 2011.
