A Prototype with a Legacy: The Rarity of Mark’s Saab 9-5 NG Hirsch

When it comes to rare Saab models, few can rival the significance and uniqueness of Mark van Kampen‘s Saab 9-5 NG Aero Hirsch. This vehicle isn’t just another high-performance Saab; it’s a prototype crafted by Hirsch Performance, the renowned Swiss tuner that left a lasting mark on the Saab community. The Journey to Ownership: From Dream to Reality

Mark van Kampen’s path to acquiring this exceptional 9-5 NG Aero Hirsch began like many Saab enthusiasts—with a poster on his wall. For years, he admired the car from afar until the opportunity presented itself in 2022. A client in northern Netherlands was looking to part with the vehicle, and Mark seized the moment.

By the end of 2022, Mark had the keys to one of the last great Saabs ever produced. This version features the most powerful V6 turbo engine, all-wheel drive, and the full suite of Hirsch upgrades, from an aggressive body kit to enhanced exhaust and suspension systems. It’s a Saab that turns heads wherever it goes, and Mark often takes it on long drives to Sweden, the spiritual home of Saab.

Performance Unleashed: Testing the Power of the Hirsch-Tuned 9-5

Curiosity about the car’s true performance led Mark to the dynamometer at AutoWeek. With Ghisbert van Ginhoven at the helm, the 9-5 NG Aero Hirsch was put to the test. The results? 325 horsepower and over 470 Nm of torque, delivering exhilarating performance and proving that this Saab is far more than just a looker.

Interestingly, Mark brought along a second ECU (Engine Control Unit), showcasing his technical expertise in tuning and repairing Saab electronics. This secondary ECU produced slightly less power, leading Mark to swiftly return the original. The final numbers may have been shy of Hirsch’s claimed 330 hp, but the extra torque more than compensates for the marginal deficit.

Swiss Precision Meets Swedish Engineering

The 9-5 NG Aero Hirsch isn’t just about raw power. Hirsch’s meticulous tuning extends to every aspect of the vehicle. The body kit, lowered suspension, custom wheels, and performance exhaust make this Saab a standout. Inside, the interior boasts Hirsch-exclusive finishes that elevate the cabin to luxury sports sedan levels.

Hirsch transformed the car into a performance powerhouse while retaining the signature Saab comfort and practicality. This balance makes Mark’s 9-5 NG the perfect grand tourer for long journeys across Europe. “I’ve driven nearly 50,000 km in two years, and it’s held up beautifully,” Mark said. Even after replacing a rear differential and a water hose near Kiel, the Saab remains as reliable as ever.

A Testament to Saab’s Enduring Legacy

What makes Mark’s Saab truly remarkable is its status as a rolling piece of Saab history. One of fewer than 11,000 9-5 NG models ever built, and with fewer Hirsch prototypes in existence, this car is a rare gem in the world of modern classics.

Mark’s expertise in Saab electronics extends beyond his own vehicle. With over 20,000 Saab ECUs repaired and serviced under his belt, Mark has become an indispensable part of the global Saab community. His work with Hedin Parts & Logistics keeps countless Saabs on the road, a testament to the brand’s resilience and the dedication of its enthusiasts.

For Mark, preserving the 9-5 NG Aero Hirsch is about more than personal pride. It’s about honoring Saab’s legacy and ensuring that future generations appreciate the innovation and craftsmanship that defined the brand. “I won’t modify it further; this car is a piece of history,” he explained. And as he continues his pilgrimages to Sweden, Mark’s 9-5 NG Aero Hirsch remains a symbol of what Saab could achieve at its best.

For over 15 years, Goran Aničić has been passionately focused on Saab automobiles and everything related to them. His initial encounter with Saab cars took place back in 2003 when the first Saab 9-3 and sedan version were introduced. At that moment, he was captivated by the car's Scandinavian design logic and top-notch engineering, and everything that followed stemmed from that first encounter. Later on, through his work at the editorial team of the Serbian automotive magazines "Autostart" and later "AutoBild," he had the opportunity to engage more closely with Saab vehicles. In 2008, he tested the latest Saab cars of that time, such as the Saab 9-3 TTiD Aero and Saab 9-3 Turbo X. In 2010, as the sole blogger from the region, he participated in the Saab 9-5ng presentation in Trollhättan, Sweden. Alongside journalists from around the world, he got a firsthand experience of the pinnacle of technological offerings from Saab at that time. Currently, Goran owns two Saabs: a 2008 Saab 9-3 Vector Sportcombi with a manual transmission, and a Saab 9-3 Aero Griffin Sport Sedan from the last generation, which rolled off the production line in Trollhättan in December 2011.
