The iconic Saab 900, with its unique design and engineering, has long captivated car enthusiasts worldwide. Among the latest opportunities to bring one of these classics back to life is a 1988 Saab 900i project car, currently on offer in Rainham, Kent, by Harry Langford, a member of the “Saab Owners Club GB.” This vehicle represents not just a restoration project but a journey back in time to the golden era of Saab’s innovative automotive design.

A Diamond in the Rough

Harry Langford’s 1988 Saab 900i comes with the honesty of a vehicle that has seen better days yet holds the promise of revival. As a non-runner with no current MOT, it challenges prospective owners to look beyond its present state and envision what could be.

Last year, the Saab breezed through its MOT without advisories, indicating that, despite appearances, the vehicle’s bones are good. The car’s issues, believed to be related to the fuel system, appear manageable, especially for those with a bit of mechanical insight and a passion for restoration.

Despite its years, the 1988 Saab 900i stands solid, presenting a brilliant opportunity for revival to its next passionate caretaker.

A Testament to Resilience

With 155,000 miles under its belt and only three previous owners, this Saab 900i showcases the resilience and enduring appeal of the model. Langford describes the car as being in “fair condition for its age,” a testament to the care it has received over the years.

Recent investments include a new exhaust, full service, powerflex bushes, and a new battery, underscoring the seller’s commitment to its maintenance. Despite the inevitable signs of wear and areas of rust, particularly on the door bottoms, the car’s solid foundation—thanks to diligent undersealing by a previous owner—offers a promising starting point for restoration.

Unlike many classic Saab project cars with deteriorated interiors and corroded chassis, this 900i is in exceptionally good condition, setting it apart as a prime candidate for restoration.

Cosmetic and Interior Potential

The Saab 900i’s aesthetic appeal lies in its authenticity and the visible history it carries. Some past bodywork repairs reveal their age, inviting a new owner to improve upon past efforts. Inside, the vehicle’s interior has aged gracefully, with the potential to shine again with some care and attention.

A successful wet-vac test in the rear passenger compartment hints at the transformative power of thorough cleaning, while the dashboard, with only minor cracks, speaks to the overall well-preserved state of the car’s interior.

An Enthusiast’s Dream Project

Langford’s 1988 Saab 900i project is more than just a car; it’s an invitation to embark on a hands-on journey through automotive history. It represents an ideal winter project or a hobby for those looking for a rewarding challenge without a hefty initial investment.

The seller’s preference to pass the vehicle on to another enthusiast rather than see it end up in a demolition derby or scrapyard reflects a common desire among classic car owners: to see their beloved vehicles restored and appreciated by those who share their passion. With an asking price of just £750, this project offers an unparalleled opportunity to breathe new life into a classic at a fraction of the expected cost.

In conclusion, this 1988 Saab 900i offers a unique opportunity for car enthusiasts to engage with a piece of automotive history. Its potential for restoration, combined with the rich heritage of the Saab 900 series, makes it a compelling project for anyone interested in bringing a classic car back to life.

For over 15 years, Goran Aničić has been passionately focused on Saab automobiles and everything related to them. His initial encounter with Saab cars took place back in 2003 when the first Saab 9-3 and sedan version were introduced. At that moment, he was captivated by the car's Scandinavian design logic and top-notch engineering, and everything that followed stemmed from that first encounter. Later on, through his work at the editorial team of the Serbian automotive magazines "Autostart" and later "AutoBild," he had the opportunity to engage more closely with Saab vehicles. In 2008, he tested the latest Saab cars of that time, such as the Saab 9-3 TTiD Aero and Saab 9-3 Turbo X. In 2010, as the sole blogger from the region, he participated in the Saab 9-5ng presentation in Trollhättan, Sweden. Alongside journalists from around the world, he got a firsthand experience of the pinnacle of technological offerings from Saab at that time. Currently, Goran owns two Saabs: a 2008 Saab 9-3 Vector Sportcombi with a manual transmission, and a Saab 9-3 Aero Griffin Sport Sedan from the last generation, which rolled off the production line in Trollhättan in December 2011.

  • 1st time I really noticed a Saab was on a drive home from the beach in my dinky little Subaru 1600 coupe when a Black Saab 900 Turbo flew past me like it was a military jet. I was in love. My own Saab 900 (non turbo) still was one of my favourite cars ever.

  • Looks great. Does it need much doing to her. I also have a 900i in SE trim from 1993 that I rescued just over a year ago. She still needs plenty of bits doing to her, but I’m enjoying the driving experience too much. Enjoy and have fun getting her back on the road.
