Introduction: The Convertible Saab Enthusiasts Always Wanted

When Saab introduced the Turbo X in 2008, it was nothing short of a celebration of their turbocharging legacy. Yet, there was a glaring omission—a convertible option. KCPerformance, a renowned Dutch tuning company, stepped in to address this missed opportunity.

With dedication and precision, they transformed a standard Saab 9-3 Convertible into a one-of-a-kind Turbo X, complete with the XWD all-wheel-drive system, a powerful V6 engine, and a bespoke interior. This article delves into the engineering marvel that is the KCPerformance Saab 9-3 Turbo X Convertible, a car Saab enthusiasts could only dream of.

KCPerformance Saab 9-3 Turbo X Convertible: The Missing Piece in Saab’s Lineup

In 2008, Saab offered the Turbo X in two configurations: a Sport Sedan and a Sport Estate. However, they missed out on what could have been the best Saab ever built—a convertible paired with the powerful 2.8L Turbo X V6 engine and Saab’s XWD all-wheel drive system with eLSD. KCPerformance recognized this gap and decided to fill it, dedicating over a year to building what Saab never did: a Turbo X Convertible that embodies the ultimate blend of performance, control, and open-air driving.

A Visionary Conversion

This project started with a 9-3 convertible originally equipped with a diesel engine. KCPerformance replaced the drivetrain with the high-performance internals and Turbo X V6 engine from a Sport Sedan. While the shared platform provided a solid foundation, the transformation required extensive work, including adapting the electronic systems, reinforcing the suspension, and integrating the XWD system with its electronically controlled rear limited-slip differential (eLSD).

Unleashing Turbo X Power

The heart of this unique convertible is a Stage 3-tuned 2.8L V6 turbocharged engine, capable of producing 400 horsepower and 600 Nm of torque. This powertrain features:

  • A hybrid turbocharger with enlarged compressor and turbine wheels for balanced and efficient boost.
  • Upgraded injectors and a rewritten ECU for enhanced performance.
  • DO88 cooling components, including an aluminum radiator and an improved intercooler.
  • A 3-inch decat downpipe paired with the original Turbo X sport exhaust system for improved flow and a deep, aggressive sound.

XWD: Stability Meets Precision

First introduced with the original Turbo X, this advanced all-wheel-drive technology ensures:

  • Dynamic power distribution between the front and rear wheels for optimal traction.
  • Superior grip on wet and uneven surfaces, eliminating torque steer.
  • Enhanced cornering precision, thanks to the electronically controlled eLSD.

The integration of Saab’s XWD all-wheel drive system, first introduced with the Turbo X, is a game-changer for this convertible. The system dynamically distributes power between the front and rear wheels, while the eLSD (electronically controlled rear limited-slip differential) ensures optimal grip on any surface. Whether tackling wet roads or sharp corners, this setup eliminates torque steer and provides unparalleled stability.

Reinforced for Open-Air Power

Unlike the Turbo X sedan, a convertible chassis inherently lacks rigidity. To counter this, KCPerformance reinforced the suspension and fitted AST 5100 adjustable dampers, enabling fine-tuning for various driving conditions. Additional upgrades include:

  • Polyurethane bushings for greater suspension stability.
  • Hankook Ventus S1 Evo 3 tires (235/40/19) on original 19-inch Turbo X wheels for improved grip.
  • Turbo X brakes, offering confidence-inspiring stopping power.

Tailored Interior and Authentic Touches

KCPerformance complemented the mechanical excellence with a bespoke interior. Featuring premium brown and black leather upholstery, accented with carbon-pattern Hirsch leather trim and elegant brown stitching, the cabin exudes luxury and sportiness.

Performance Beyond Expectations

The Turbo X Convertible performs exceptionally well in conditions that challenge lesser vehicles. On slippery or uneven roads, the XWD system with eLSD and reinforced suspension shine. With the V6 turbo engine’s ferocious acceleration, it transitions from composed cruising to exhilarating performance in seconds. The car’s ability to handle the increased power with poise showcases KCPerformance’s engineering expertise.

For over 15 years, Goran Aničić has been passionately focused on Saab automobiles and everything related to them. His initial encounter with Saab cars took place back in 2003 when the first Saab 9-3 and sedan version were introduced. At that moment, he was captivated by the car's Scandinavian design logic and top-notch engineering, and everything that followed stemmed from that first encounter. Later on, through his work at the editorial team of the Serbian automotive magazines "Autostart" and later "AutoBild," he had the opportunity to engage more closely with Saab vehicles. In 2008, he tested the latest Saab cars of that time, such as the Saab 9-3 TTiD Aero and Saab 9-3 Turbo X. In 2010, as the sole blogger from the region, he participated in the Saab 9-5ng presentation in Trollhättan, Sweden. Alongside journalists from around the world, he got a firsthand experience of the pinnacle of technological offerings from Saab at that time. Currently, Goran owns two Saabs: a 2008 Saab 9-3 Vector Sportcombi with a manual transmission, and a Saab 9-3 Aero Griffin Sport Sedan from the last generation, which rolled off the production line in Trollhättan in December 2011.
