Historical Context
The Saab 9-3 Evolution
The first generation of the new Saab 9-3, produced from 1998 to 2003, was primarily a facelift of the earlier 900 model. The second generation, introduced in 2003, brought significant changes, including the transition from a combi-coupe to a sedan, or as Saab called it, a SportSedan.
The following year saw the introduction of a new Cabriolet, built on the GM Epsilon platform, shared with models like the Opel Vectra and Cadillac BLS. Production of the second-generation 9-3 Cabriolet initially took place at Magna-Steyr in Austria before moving back to Trollhättan, and the final 2012 model year cars were assembled in Nyköping.
Hirsch Performance and Saab
Hirsch Performance AG, a Swiss company, has a long history with Saab, dating back to 1967 when Georg Hirsch became a Saab dealer in St-Gallen. In 1987, a spin-off company, Carline AG (later HPAG), began specializing in individual car refinements. By 1993, Hirsch was focusing on engine upgrades, and in 2002, the brand Saab Performance by Hirsch was established in official collaboration with Saab in Trollhättan. Although this partnership ended with Saab’s closure, Hirsch Performance continues to thrive as a center for tuning and developing Saab cars.
MapTun Performance
Based in Örebro, Sweden, MapTun Performance started with software upgrades for Saab vehicles but has since grown into a full-service tuning company. They offer everything from basic engine repairs to advanced custom builds, and their various brands include MapTun Powersports, Parts, Pole Position, and a dedicated car repair shop.
