The Rarest Saab: 9-3 Aero Convertible Independence Edition

At the center of this year’s auction is the 9-3 Aero Cabriolet Independence Edition, a car that holds a special place in Saab history. Originally intended to commemorate Saab’s independence from General Motors, only 38 units of this model were ever produced due to the company’s bankruptcy in December 2011.

The Independence Edition features a unique Sunset Red color, carbon fiber and leather interior with hand-stitched details, and a 1.9-liter diesel engine producing 180 horsepower. The specific car up for auction is the second in the series and has a fascinating history, having been owned by a car dealer who later sold it to a couple under the condition of repurchase.

The Highlight of the Auction: Saab 9-3 Cabriolet Independence Edition

One of the most sought-after cars in the Saab world, the Saab 9-3 Cabriolet Independence Edition, is set to be the star of this year’s auction. Limited to just 38 units, this particular model is number 2 in the series (here is No. 8 also). The Independence Edition’s specifications were based on the top-of-the-line Griffin Aero, featuring a unique Sunset Red color, a Hirsch carbon fiber and leather-wrapped instrument panel, a new sport steering wheel, an exclusive turbo boost gauge with an orange needle, new 18-inch wheels, and sport seats with gray leather upholstery and orange stitching and stripes.

This special model was intended to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the first Saab convertible sale. Each unit was planned to be individually numbered, with the number etched into the rear side windows. Saab’s then-CEO, Jan Åke Jonsson, declared it a day of independence and celebration for the company, highlighting their freedom to make their own decisions and control their destiny. The day was celebrated at the Saab factory in Trollhättan with cake and musical performances.

The 9-3 Cabriolet Independence Edition made its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2011. However, due to Saab’s financial troubles and difficulties in securing parts, only 38 units were produced before the company declared bankruptcy in December 2011. The car currently up for auction, number 2, was originally purchased by well-known Saab dealer Kjell Heintz in Åmål, who intended to keep it as a delightful summer vehicle. Initially displayed in the showroom to attract customers, it quickly gained attention from enthusiasts and curious onlookers alike.

A few months later, an elderly couple from Söderhamn, acquaintances of Heintz, expressed their desire to buy the car. After negotiations, the sale was made with the condition that Heintz could buy it back if they ever decided to sell it. The car was registered by Saab Automobile in 2011 but was only put into use on October 16, 2013, when the couple took it on the road. They drove the car for over 30,000 kilometers until 2022, at which point they felt content with their ownership. The car was then sold back to the now-retired Saab dealer Kjell Heintz.

The Independence Edition is equipped with a 1.9L TTid diesel engine with twin-stage turbocharging, producing 180 horsepower. It features an automatic transmission and is in excellent working condition with no noted issues. The exterior is very well maintained, indicative of careful summer-only use. There is a minor scratch under the right rear light, but otherwise, the paint and convertible top are in normal condition. The interior remains in fantastic shape, belying the car’s 12-year age and 35,320 kilometers on the odometer. This remarkable vehicle is now up for auction, offering a unique opportunity for a true Saab enthusiast to own a piece of automotive history.

In 2008, he tested the latest Saab cars of that time, such as the Saab 9-3 TTiD Aero and Saab 9-3 Turbo X. In 2010, as the sole blogger from the region, he participated in the Saab 9-5ng presentation in Trollhättan, Sweden. Alongside journalists from around the world, he got a firsthand experience of the pinnacle of technological offerings from Saab at that time. Currently, Goran owns two Saabs: a 2008 Saab 9-3 Vector Sportcombi with a manual transmission, and a Saab 9-3 Aero Griffin Sport Sedan from the last generation, which rolled off the production line in Trollhättan in December 2011.
