In the world of car modifications, blending the iconic with the unexpected often leads to some of the most exciting builds. One such example is Christian Hjukström’s project, which has affectionately been dubbed the “Saabazon.”

This unique vehicle marries the robust charm of a 1966 Volvo Amazon with the spirited heart of a Saab, specifically a turbocharged 2.3L DOHC 16-valve four-cylinder B235 engine. But this is no ordinary engine swap; this is a story of a Swedish synergy, where tradition meets unbridled power, creating a ride that’s as unapologetic as it is powerful.

The Unholy Alliance: A Saab Engine in a Volvo Chassis

The idea of placing a Saab engine into a Volvo might sound like blasphemy to purists of either brand. Yet, Christian’s creation challenges the norm and highlights the innovative spirit of Swedish engineering. The “Saabazon” project is a testament to what can be achieved when you look beyond brand loyalty to focus purely on performance and personal expression.

This Volvo Amazon, a car known for its durability and simplicity, has been transformed into a powerhouse that stands as a symbol of cross-brand camaraderie within the Swedish auto industry.

Power Beyond Belief: The Engine Transformation

At the heart of this transformation is the Saab B235 engine. Originally producing just under 260 horsepower, the engine has been extensively modified to push the boundaries of power.

With upgrades including a Maxspeedingrods GT3071 turbocharger, custom manifold, and E85 fuel system, Christian has elevated this engine to produce a staggering 536 wheel horsepower, with potential for even more. The integration of B234 pistons, B202 camshafts, and a modified intake plenum ensures this engine not only has the power but also the unique driving characteristics Christian sought.

Keeping It Grounded: Chassis and Suspension Upgrades

To handle the substantial increase in power, significant upgrades were made to the “Saabazon’s” chassis and suspension. The integration of polyurethane bushings, Bilstein dampers, and a fully adjustable four-link rear end with QA1 shock absorbers ensures that the car remains stable and responsive, regardless of the power it’s putting down. The choice of Nankang AR1 semi-slick tires, wrapped around Tesla Model 3 wheels, provides the necessary grip to translate power into motion, proving that this vehicle is as much about performance as it is about heritage.

The Daily Driver Philosophy: Utilitarian Aesthetics Meet Modern Power

Christian’s vision for the “Saabazon” was never about creating a show car; it was about building a powerful daily driver that embraces its flaws and history. The car’s bodywork remains largely original, with every imperfection telling a story of its past. Inside, the blend of modern and vintage continues with Saab electric memory seats, a digital tablet for engine information, and an original ’60s-era steering wheel. This approach not only preserves the car’s character but also underscores the practicality of modernizing classic vehicles for everyday use.

The Road Ahead: A Testament to Swedish Engineering

Christian Hjukström’s “Saabazon” is more than just a car; it’s a narrative on creativity, innovation, and the endless possibilities within the automotive world. It challenges preconceptions, celebrates the fusion of two iconic Swedish brands, and stands as a beacon for those who dare to dream and build outside the box. As this Volvo Amazon continues to evolve, it serves as a reminder of the passion and perseverance that drive the car culture forward, making it a source of inspiration for Saab enthusiasts and car lovers alike.

For over 15 years, Goran Aničić has been passionately focused on Saab automobiles and everything related to them. His initial encounter with Saab cars took place back in 2003 when the first Saab 9-3 and sedan version were introduced. At that moment, he was captivated by the car's Scandinavian design logic and top-notch engineering, and everything that followed stemmed from that first encounter. Later on, through his work at the editorial team of the Serbian automotive magazines "Autostart" and later "AutoBild," he had the opportunity to engage more closely with Saab vehicles. In 2008, he tested the latest Saab cars of that time, such as the Saab 9-3 TTiD Aero and Saab 9-3 Turbo X. In 2010, as the sole blogger from the region, he participated in the Saab 9-5ng presentation in Trollhättan, Sweden. Alongside journalists from around the world, he got a firsthand experience of the pinnacle of technological offerings from Saab at that time. Currently, Goran owns two Saabs: a 2008 Saab 9-3 Vector Sportcombi with a manual transmission, and a Saab 9-3 Aero Griffin Sport Sedan from the last generation, which rolled off the production line in Trollhättan in December 2011.
